Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use. Most electrical safety defects can be found by visual examination but some types of defect can only be found by testing.

Do my appliances need PAT testing?

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe condition. If you provide portable electrical appliances of any kind in your business or rental premises etc you are required to ensure they’re safe to use. You can meet these obligations by having your portable appliances PAT Tested.

How often do my appliances need PAT Testing?

The frequency in which your appliances need PAT Testing will depend on what the appliance is, how often it’s used and how it’s used. Most items are checked annually, however there are exceptions (see below).
